“God Willing” – Pastor’s Pen January 2023

It’s good to plan ahead as long as we bear in mind this simple truth: “You don’t know the first thing about tomorrow,” (James 4:14 MSG).  We’re in the dark.  We can plan and imagine and put in place good attitudes and a road map, but ultimately, our tomorrows are totally dependent on God – and that’s the way it should be.

The expression, “God willing” is a good one to use when discussing plans and aspirations.  It shows humility and acceptance that we are not the ones running the show.  “God willing” reminds us of our place: dependent on a perfect, loving Father who knows exactly what we need better than we do.  I love the way David described his single aim in life:  “I’m asking God for one thing, only one thing: to live with Him in His house my whole life long.  I’ll contemplate His beauty. I’ll study at His feet,” (Psalm 27:4 MSG).  David simply wanted to be close to the Creator.  He knew that if he was a friend of God then the rest would take care of itself.  Yes, David would do his part by being faithful, hardworking, wise, determined, and brave, but beyond that, he would trust his future to the goodness of God.  He would trust God to look after the plans and after himself.

If you want a direction for your life, be like David.  Don’t try to fit God into your plans.  Live in His ways in terms of your words, actions, and attitudes.  Then let Him lead your heart and what you do with your days.  God so often works through our heart’s desires.

May you have a blessed New Year,
Pastor John
