“Guard Your Words” – Pastor’s Pen – April, 2025

“A perverse person stirs up conflict, and a gossip separates close friends” (Proverbs 16: 28)

We all get angry at times, and we all say things we later regret. But be under no illusion, words we say can cause a great deal of trouble, so be careful. By the way, if you’re ever unsure whether you’re gossiping or not ask yourself this: Will the person you’re speaking to think less or worse of the person you’re speaking about?  If the answer is yes, then it’s gossip, and leave it out.

But our words can also heal.  “A gentle response defuses anger” (Proverbs 15:1 MSG) “Kind words heal and help, and the soothing tongue is a tree of life” (v.4).

If we offer genuine encouragement to people, we are offering verbal sunshine, the sort of truth that can make people’s day, even change their lives.

Ultimately, how you speak about others speaks loudest about yourself. (my mother taught me that). So always guard your words and know their power to build or destroy.

Have a blessed spring,
Pastor John
